The history of Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) started in 2020 when the proposal for its establishment was submitted to the National University Commission (NUC) in February. The official approval to commence university activities was granted on May 12, 2022. The conceptualization of Northwest University began about 15 years earlier through the vision of then Northwest Governors, including the founder and proprietor, Sarkin Yamman Sokoto, Senator, Dr. Aliyu Magatakada Wamakko.
The primary objectives behind the establishment of the university were multifaceted. Firstly, it aimed at providing quality education to the population of the northwestern states, contributing to national education efforts, and bridging the educational gap between northern and southern regions of Nigeria. Furthermore, the university sought to revolutionize educational development by focusing on innovation and entrepreneurial skills.
Recognizing the economic challenges faced by the country, especially in Northern Nigeria, NWUS took a proactive step to make education more accessible. The university reduced its tuition fees to the lowest feasible level, making it the most affordable option when compared to other private universities in Nigeria.
