Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship 2023/2024

The World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC) offers scholarships to students and young researchers. These scholarships aim to help the developing world by supporting capacity development and sharing knowledge. The DEC’s goal is to find innovative ways to promote growth and progress in developing countries.

Despite the glaring fact that the Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is available to individuals from developing countries, there are some conditions that need to be fulfilled before they can benefit from the Scholarships. This article will provide guides and other important information to know about the Scholarship.

Program of Study

Scholarships are offered to students who have been accepted into specific master’s programs. The eligible programs include MSc Development Management, MSc Development Studies, MSc Public Policy, MSc Global Health Policy, MSc Economic and Public Policy, and MSc International Social and Public Policy.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Nationality: The applicant must be a citizen of a World Bank member country.
  • Dual Citizenship: The applicant should not hold citizenship of any developed country.
  • World Bank Affiliation: The applicant must not be an Executive Director, alternate, or staff member (including temporary and consultant positions) of any division of the World Bank Group. Additionally, the applicant should not be a close relative of such individuals.
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent university degree obtained at least three years before the application deadline is mandatory.
  • Development-Related Work Experience: The applicant must be employed in a full-time paid position related to development work at the time of applying for the scholarship. They should have a minimum of three years of paid development-related work experience since obtaining their bachelor’s degree, acquired within the past six years from the application deadline. Part-time employment may be considered.
  • Admission to Participating Programs: The applicant must have received an unconditional admission offer (except for funding) for the upcoming academic year to at least one of the participating programs of the JJ/WBGSP: The program should be located outside the applicant’s country of citizenship and country of residence.
  • Previous Scholarship Recipients: Individuals who have previously declined a JJWBGSP scholarship offer or have received a scholarship but did not graduate are not eligible to reapply.

Host Institution

SOAS University of London, University of Leeds, London School of Economics, and other participating institutions in Asia, America, Australia, Africa, and Oceania.

Scholarship Value

The scholarship is fully funded, so the package will depend on the applicant’s respective institution. Each beneficiary will also get cover for living expenses and travel.

Application Instruction

Application is to be submitted online. To benefit from the Scholarship, the first thing is to receive an unconditional Letter of Admission for the upcoming academic year or be given an offer to study any of the eligible programs in participating institutions.
