The West African Examination Council (WAEC) does entertain a change of name on a candidate’s result. There have been incidents of omission or name misspelled which is usually overlooked by parents and candidates until they are later educated about the dangers that such could pose for the candidate.
To avoid this, there will be a need to correct this. Unfortunately, this is not something that you can do by logging into the WAEC Portal and edit yourself. There is a process to follow and we will be guiding you on how to go about it.
The solution presented in this post has been confirmed and proven to work, so there should not be any reason why it is not going to work unless it is a shady claim.
1 Requirements for changing of name on a WAEC result
1. Original certificate
First, the certificate bearing the error will be needed to process the correction on your name. The correction could be made on your first name, middle name, or last name.
2. Affidavit for correction of Name
An affidavit is a sworn statement in writing. This can be obtained in any high court. You will be charged a small amount known as a requisite fee. Upon granted, a receipt will be issued to you.
3. Letter from the school principal
A letter from your principal will also be required as part of the documents needed to confirm it is a legit claim. WAEC wants to be sure and since your school principal also has your documents, a reference from him or her will help aid your cause.
4. Original Birth certificate for sighting and photocopy for submission
Candidates must also provide their original birth certificate which will be returned to them after being seen. However, a photocopy of the document must be submitted.
5. 10,000 Naira
To process your request, you will also need to pay an administrative fee of ₦10,000 to the Exam Board. The fee is non-refundable.
2 How to change the name in WAEC Result
To amend or correct the names on your WAEC certificate, simply go to any WAEC office close to you with all the requirements.
Meet any of the officials and also ensure you pay the admin fee of ₦10,000. This will confirm the process.
If you are a school candidate, it also follows almost the same process except that you will be dealing with the school directly. Only on rare occasions, they will direct you to the WAEC Office. From our observation, we notice that the council usually processes the amendment of names for school candidates faster.
3 What correction of Name can be attended to by WAEC?
While it is true that WAEC honours change of name on a WAEC result. Still, not every request is attended to. You can’t change or replace a name with a completely different one. However, you can expand initials, rearrange names, or correct small typos in the name (up to three characters) if you provide the necessary proof or supporting documents.
4 How long does a change of name in the WAEC result take?
According to WAEC officials, the change of name is usually finalized in 3 to 4 months. However, this may also extend to up to 6 months.
As a candidate, the waiting period is usually the most difficult time especially if you need the correction to be effected quickly. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable.
