ARES Scholarships for Developing Countries 2024/2025

The ARES scholarships provide qualified students from eligible developing countries with the chance to enroll in a one-year advanced bachelor’s or master’s degree program or participate in a 2 to 6-month continuing education program at a higher education institution in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in Belgium.

The scholarship is an opportunity for students from these countries to secure quality education in Belgium which will also expose them to several opportunities. Therefore if you possess the necessary requirements, the time is ticking and no better time but now to apply.

Program of Study

Eligible Advanced bachelor’s, Masters, and continuing education courses (2 to 6 months) offered at the participating Institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the ARES scholarships, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Reside, work, and hold nationality in one of the eligible countries.
  • Hold a diploma equivalent to a graduate-level degree (300 credits ECTS) from Belgian university studies for advanced masters and continuing education courses (equivalent to Bac+5).
  • Hold a diploma equivalent to an undergraduate-level degree (180 credits ECTS) for advanced bachelors (equivalent to Bac+3).
  • The relevant academic degree must have been obtained no more than 20 years before the start of the course. This maximum period is extended by one year for each childbirth and/or adoption.
  • Possess relevant professional experience in an ARES partner country of at least two years after graduate studies for advanced bachelors and after postgraduate studies for advanced masters and continuing education courses.
  • Complete the application in the language in which the training is conducted and demonstrate good written and spoken proficiency in it. Additionally, having a minimum knowledge of French is beneficial for effective integration into daily life in Belgium.

Scholarship Value

Every year, The ARES grants approximately 130 Master’s and Bachelor’s scholarships, along with 70 Continuing Education scholarships to individuals from its partner countries. The scholarships provided by The ARES encompass the following financial aspects:

1. Amounts for a Bachelor’s or Master’s scholarship

  • International travel expenses
  • Living allowance
  • Exceptional costs associated with visa applications
  • Registration fees for Bachelor’s or Master’s scholarships
  • Insurance

2. Amounts for a Continuing education scholarship

  • International travel costs: Economy-class round-trip ticket on an IATA-approved airline, with receipts required.
  • Living allowance: A lump sum for the duration of the course.
  • Indirect mission costs: A lump sum given once upon the scholar’s arrival.
  • Insurance costs: Directly covered by ARES.

Where and how to apply

To apply for an ARES scholarship, follow these steps:

  • Ensure you have an active GIRAF account. If you don’t have one, create an account on the GIRAF platform. ARES will validate your account within a few hours to a few days, and you’ll receive a confirmation email to create a password.
  • Log into your GIRAF account and access the application form via the Competitive calls tab in your profile. Click once on the “International training application 2024-2025” button. You will find your form in the My tasks table under Competitive calls.
  • You can complete your form multiple times, using the “Save and edit later” option. Your form will be accessible in the My Tasks table under Competitive calls in GIRAF each time.
  • Once you’re ready, click “Submit my application.”

ARES scholarship is entirely free, and ARES does not charge any fees at any stage of the application process.
